PANEL: Building & Expanding Critical Infrastructure to Increase Transportation Fuel Exports from the Midwest: Ethanol, Biodiesel, Bio Jet Fuels

 

JASON MARQUIS, PRESIDENT

Marquis Energy, Hennepin, IL

 

Mr. Jason Marquis, a graduate of the University of Illinois, is President and Production  Manager of Marquis Energy, LLC.  Jason served as an operator in May of 2008, before moving into the role of Marquis Energy LLC’s Production Manager.  In November of 2009, Mr. Marquis founded  Marquis Management Services, Inc., which focused on providing management services to the biorefining industry.  Jason continues  to serve as the President of Marquis Management Services, Inc.

 

As Marquis Energy LLC’s Production Manager, Jason led the team in an array of capital improvement projects, new processes and the implementation of  best practices.  These efforts resulted in a 5% increase in ethanol yields, 14% decrease in energy consumption, and a 45% increase in effective capacity.  

 

In just 4 short years, Marquis Management Services Inc. has grown into a full service bio-refinery management company with over 25 full-time employees.   Along with biorefining production expertise, Marquis Management offers distillers grains, ethanol & oil marketing services.  Jason resides in Princeton, IL., with his wife Stephanie.

 

 

DAVE CEPLA, MANAGING DIRECTOR

Envergent Technologies, LLC, (A Honeywell Company) Des Plaines, IL

 

Dave Cepla is the managing director of Envergent Technologies LLC, a joint venture between Honeywell’s UOP and Ensyn Corporation.  In this role, Dave serves as the leader for technology development, engineering, sales and marketing of RTP® rapid thermal processing technology to convert biomass to heat, power and transportation fuels. 

 

Cepla brings more than 30 years of experience in technology and clean energy industries.  He most recently served as president and CEO of HyRadix, Inc., a provider of hydrogen generation solutions overseeing all aspects of business operations including the development of funding sources, marketing and global sales.  During his time with UOP, Dave served in various development, marketing and technical roles, supporting product development, integrated technology lines and sales.

 

Dave holds a Masters in Business Administration from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from University of Colorado.

 

 

JUDD HULTING, COMMODITIES MANAGER

Patriot Renewable Fuels, LLC, Annawan, IL

 

Judd Hulting served as Project Coordinator for Patriot Renewable Fuels, LLC from 2006-2008 and for past last six years has been the Commodity Manager. Patriot Renewable Fuels, LLC is a 130 million gallon ethanol production facility and will open a 5 million gallon biodiesel plant in late 2014. Mr. Hulting has B.S. and M.S. agriculture degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He and his wife and son currently reside in Bettendorf, Iowa and remain active in production agriculture and beekeeping.

 

 

GLENN JOHNSTON, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

GEVO, Englewood, CO

 

Glenn Johnston is the Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for Gevo Inc. Mr. Johnston has over 25 years’ experience in the biotech/chemical global regulatory arena. He currently serves as the chair of the regulatory committee and board member of the Advanced Biofuels Association (ABFA) and Chair of the IES Biofuels Committee of Biotechnology Industry Organization. Mr. Johnston currently chairs the ASTM Butanol Task Group and is the chair of the ASTM Alcohol to Jet task force. Mr. Johnston has been recognized by ASTM with the “Award of Excellence” for his dedication and contributions to developing standards. Prior to joining Gevo, Mr. Johnston was Director of Regulatory Affairs with NatureWorks, LLC, where he managed product stewardship issues and integrated his work with global influences regarding toxicology, environmental, and safety. Preceding his tenure at NatureWorks, Mr. Johnston helped lead the regulatory effort in the plastics division of Sandoz Chemicals. During his long-standing career, he has gained extensive experience related to food legislation (FDA, EU, JHOSPA, KFDA, MERCOSUR, etc), chemical legislation (TSCA, EINECS, DSL, METI, KCL, and AICS), animal feed requirements (US FDA, AAFCO), and other regulatory laws that affect the biotech supply chain. He has worked with industry groups in Japan (JHOSPA), Taiwan (EBPA), the U.S. (BPI), the European Union (IBAW) and China (BMG). He is currently a Member of ASTM D02, and has also been a Delegate of ISO TC61 and CENTC249, and a Member of ASTM D20. Mr. Johnston has participated on the board of directors of various industry trade associations and has published papers and given speeches on biotech/chemical regulatory framework throughout the globe.

FRED MCCOY, MASTER MECHANIC 

Cedar Rapids & Iowa City Railway Co., Cedar Rapids, IA

 

Fred McCoy is the Master Mechanic for the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway (CRANDIC). He has been with the award-winning Cedar Rapids-based company since 1998. Fred’s extensive experience in railroading includes successful stints at the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Omnitrax and Relco. Through a combination of decades of hands-on experience, vision and determination for excellence, Fred has overseen countless groundbreaking locomotive fleet improvements – making CRANDIC one of the greenest short-line railroads in the country.

 

 

PENNY SHERROD-CAMPANIZZI, PRESIDENT

Global Power/Koontz Wagner, South Bend, IN

 

Penny Sherrod-Campanizzi has served as President of Electrical Solutions and President of Koontz-Wagner Custom Controls for Global Power Equipment Group Inc, since September 2013. She joined Global Power in 2010 as Chief Operating Officer of their former Services segment, then served as Senior Vice President of Operations and Support and was named President of Energy, Parts and Control Solutions for the Product Solutions segment in November 2012. Prior to joining Global Power, Penny worked for over 30 years at Babcock & Wilcox and held positions of increasing responsibility including Director, Business Development, Director, Enterprise Systems and General Manager, Replacement Parts. Ms. Sherrod-Campanizzi graduated from Hiram College with a Bachelor of Arts, and has an MBA from the University of Phoenix. Penny and Koontz-Wagner are a feature story in US Builders Review, WINTER 2014 Edition III. She is the recipient of the 2012 Best Business Integration award and the 2013 recipient of Best Business Performance award by Global Power’s CEO. She brings over 35 years of industry experience, leadership and operational management that have enabled her to lead her team in developing and executing on their strategic growth goals throughout multiple manufacturing facilities to deliver innovative solutions to clients in energy and other industries in the most efficient and cost-effective means available.

 

 

AARON TENNANT, CEO

Tennant Truck Lines, Colona, IL

 

Aaron Tennant is the CEO of Tennant Truck Lines, Inc.  Founded by Aaron’s grandfather in 1946, the company is an open deck carrier that services the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Midwest regions of the country.  In his 25 years with the company, Aaron has held virtually every position. He ultimately purchased Tennant Truck Lines in 2009. Since that time, Aaron has expanded the operations and service offerings of the company resulting in year over year double digit percentage growth.  The company was recognized by the Truck Load Carrier’s Association as a “Top 20 Fleets to Drive For” for both 2012 and 2013, a CCJ Innovator for 2012, and recently received the Smartway Excellence Award in 2013.

 

Aaron is an active participant in many industry related associations.  He served as president of the Machinery Haulers Association from 2009 to 2011 and is currently the First Vice President of the Board.  While currently an officer for the Truckload Carriers Association, he also served as co-chairman for the membership committee from 2009 to 2011.  He is the Chairman for the American Trucking Associations Communications & Image Policy Committee.  Aaron is also active with the Iowa Motor Truck Association and the Illinois Trucking Association.  He is well known in his community for his support of many local charitable organizations.         

 

 

CHRIS HUMMER, VICE PRESIDENT

Don Hummer Trucking Corporation, Oxford, IA

 

Chris literally grew up in the trucking business, he received his Class A CDL while still in high school and continues to have a CDL today.   He started as a local driver in eastern IA before moving into the company’s maintenance department as a mechanic and eventually moved up to Director of Maintenance prior to leaving the company to attend college. 

 

At the University of Cincinnati, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management and Entrepreneurship. During his college years, Chris spent his summers and weekends hauling freight in the Midwest and Eastern US.   Following college he returned to the company as Operations Manager.   In 2009, Chris was named Vice President and became responsible for all facets of running the growing operation.   In April 2012, Chris acquired Lillibridge Transportation, Inc.   This truckload operation was successfully merged into Don Hummer Trucking in July 2013.  The former Lillibridge Logistics brokerage operation became LTI Delivers, Inc in April 2014 and now operates as a subsidiary of Hummer Consolidated Holdings Corp.  Today Don Hummer Trucking Corp. operates over 200 power units and over 400 trailers. The company provides local, regional, and national truckload dry van and temperature controlled service.  Chris has been active in the Truckload Carriers Association as a participant in the Young Transportation Executives Program, several association committees and the Board of Directors.   Don Hummer Trucking is a past recipient of the Truckload Carriers Association Grand Prize Safety Award and has been named a Best Fleets to Drive For four times. Additional industry activity includes participating in the McLeod Software Executive Advisory Council and past Board Member, moderator, and presenter at the University of Georgia Trucking Profitability Strategies program. Chris and his wife Amy live in Cedar Rapids, IA with their two sons Xavier and Maximus.
